The heritage-listed Victoria House was built in 1938 as an addition to the Shenton Park Hospital, which closed its doors in 2014. Originally established with tents in the bush to isolate smallpox patients, the hospital began to treat orthopaedic patients and soon became a dedicated paraplegic unit.
Construction has recently begun (August 2021) on the 8,487sqm site, which will see four buildings built with 81 apartments around Victoria House, which will be refurbished as part of the development.
Targeting an impressive five-star Green Star and eight-star NatHERS rating, the Victoria House precinct will be designed with the environment in mind. With an energy-passive design, embedded solar networks, PV solar panels, improved acoustic performance, high performance glazing as well as a few other considerations included in the planning, it is sure to be a benchmark for future developments.
The $65 million construction is expected to be completed late 2022.
