Curtin Uni Crane Climb (3rd)
The climb was off to an interesting start, right from the get go!
For the first time ever, a security patrol car slowly drives past me some 20m away. There is a lot of light behind me so I don’t know how they don’t see me before I drop to the ground. They drove up and re-enter the site a little further, still in view of me if they were checking their rear mirrors. I have never seen them park up there before.
There were two cameras in the distance but I had to take a chance that they hadn’t moved to look my way. A serious one to my left thankfully hadn’t moved. What luck!
Thankfully it was nice and quiet inside the site. I make it to the base of the crane. Finally! It seems like such a long time ago since I’ve climbed it.
I make quite a bit of noise getting in but surprisingly, no one hears me. So I start the long climb up.
Just below the slew, I notice the security patrol car in the carpark in full view of me. I have no idea if they’ve seen me, so I climb up through the slew. The crane is brightly lit and I am wearing dark clothes. Allis can do was hope for the best, hoping the security guard was busy watching his portable security camera monitor for any activity or sign of life limited to the street level.
As soon as I reach the top, it starts to rain. I had checked the weather forecast whilst I was walking over but the chances seemed too low to worry. This was my third and last climb of this crane. I was planning to climb up the A-frame ladder and maybe a few metres up the luffing boom but there was no chance of that now that the rain was coming in. One of the unofficial crane climbing rules is to not climb when it’s wet and raining.
I didn’t stay long. The rain was getting heavier. The security patrol car had thankfully since driven off so it was quite easy to head back down and offsite. Straight into a warm bed!
